Location
From Blacksburg, take 460W for 10 miles until you see the green sign
for Mountain Lake to the right. Follow the road up the mountain for 8 miles and
you will run into the lake. The property around the lake is owned by the
resort, and when the resort is open, you can pay the daily use fee to dive
here.
Description
Clay bottom several feet deep cuts visibility to nothing
when disturbed. The far side of the lake is deep going down to 82' (depending
on water level). All surface light is lost at 35-45'. There are a few piping
failure holes in the clay, which is possibility where water drains out. There
is also an old wooden row boat in the 60' water, but nothing else. This is an
altitude dive at 4000' and extremely cold. The lake stratifies in the summer,
resulting in 1' visibility. After the lake turns over in the fall visibility at
the bottom increases from 10-20'.
