Location

Currently there is no road access to the spring. The area has been purchased by the state, and road access should be completed in 2002. The access to the spring is by boat only. Two links below are for dive shops that over boat charters to the spring. There are two put on in spots up and downstream of the spring. From the interesection of US 129 and US 27 in Branford, go North on 27 for about 5.3 miles and turn right onto a paved road across the street from the white house. Take the paved road 1.3 miles until it begins to curve left. There is a dirt road on the right with signs that say "Troy Springs State Recreational Area". Take a left on the first dirt road, and a left on the next road after that. This will bring you into a small parking area, which overlooks the Suwanee River. This is the downstream access.

To get to the upstream access, take the curve on the paved road until it turns in a dirt road and there is a sign for "Troy Springs State Recreational Area". This rural road makes its way back to the river upstream of the spring. For additional information, contact one of the links below.

Description

The spring is a hole with depths to 80 feet (depending on the water level). The spring has a rocky bottom at 70-80' without a cave system. There are ledges which a diver can get underneath, so be aware not to enter an overhead environment. The water is very clear, and this is a popular spot to take Open Water classes for check-out dives. At the end of the run toward the river are the remains of the "Madison" a Civil War steamboat. Not much remains except for the ribs of the ship, but it is something cool to look at with a snorkel during surface intervals.
