Location

About 15 miles off shore, 35.55N, 73.13W northeast of Cape Hatteras

Description

In early January 1942, the German operation called "Drumbeat" was begun. On April 14, 1942, the USS ROPER discovered the U-boat on the surface and began to attack. The U-85 submerged and took evasive action; however, the USS ROPER was successful in damaging the submarine and it surfaced to allow the crew to abandon ship. German sources state that half of the ship's crew got off when the sub began to sink. The ROPER is then made a depth charge attack on the sinking/submerging U-boat. All 45 hands on the U-boat were lost.

The sub rests in 110' of water listing to the starboard. The deck gun points upward at a 45 degree angle and there is substantial marine life around.
